Do these lyrics from The Doors classic song “Break On Through to the Other Side” resonate with you?
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, yeah
When you embrace fears for an extended period of time, those fears become barriers that can prevent you from living your best life or taking your career to the next level.
Thought fears and emotional fears hang out energetically in our subconscious minds, and over time, those fears can eat away at us from the inside out. Yet many people resist facing their fears.
Why? Two reasons:
According to Succeed On Purpose President and CEO Terri Maxwell, “Fear energy gets trapped in the body, and whenever something triggers a fear, it also triggers fear energy. So, the fear feels bigger than it actually is.”
For example, say you’re afraid to climb a tall ladder because you fell out of a tree as a kid. As you scale that ladder, your fear triggers that pocket of energy and sends energy pulses through your body.
You think you should be afraid, but you really shouldn’t. Instead, you need to release that energy. In order to do so, those fears need to move from the subconscious to the conscious mind.
As Terri explains, “By making fears conscious, your mind becomes aware, and you can acknowledge you feel afraid. By moving that fear – either the thoughts or emotions related to that fear – into the conscious mind, you have the ability to challenge it and release it. By realizing those fears are based in the past or that they are fears of the future, you can start living in the present and overcome them.”
These fears are biggies and the ones that hold most people back. “People don’t like to look at that ‘not good enough’ piece – they want to ignore it. They also don’t realize they’re afraid to confront those fears, but once you confront them and tell yourself the truth, it’s really quite easy to overcome,” Terri says.

After attending a networking event where Terri was a guest speaker, Karen Markle, MBA, knew she was ready to do more to have more.
Through the Discovery Program, Pure Confidence Program and one-on-one coaching with Terri, Karen discovered her true purpose to restore value. She strives to bring a sense of healing to others, not as the medical doctor she once aspired to be, but through her true passion for writing.
According to Karen, “I have always been the type of person who speaks from the heart. I want to be uplifting to people and tell them what they need to hear. I AM healing people through my writing workshop.”
Being open to facing her fears was life changing for Karen. As she explains, “Pure Confidence set me on fire and gave me the permission to be who I am. I still struggle with doubts, but I’ve made the mind shift change, and I know who I am.” Today Karen helps senior citizens heal by facilitating guided senior autobiography writing.
The journey to overcome your fears is not an easy one to take, but the victory is well worth the battle.
